In organic farming, we want to work with nature as best we can, so the idea of ​​the circle is essential. It is even better, in addition to the concept of circularity, to emphasize diversity in agriculture.

This is definitely the case at the Dottenfelderhof. The Demeter plant is located in Bad Vilbel near Frankfurt am Main. If the court could speak, it would certainly have a lot to say. It was first mentioned in a document in 976 and much has happened there since.

More than one community

History leads us to 2020. Right now, a multi-family consortium, founded in 1968, runs the farm. About 100 people now live in the Dottenfelderhof, who, together with outside colleagues, manage the farm in all its aspects.

In addition to the functional community, the rural community – as the name implies – takes care of the farm aspects of the farm. The fields of activity on the farm are as different as the people themselves, after all, there is a lot of work. Whether in agriculture, the bakery or the pastry shop, your own dairy, the agricultural school, the school farm, the café or the new farm – boredom does not show up so quickly.

Animal diversity

Diversity can be found in every area of ​​the Dottenfelderhof, but agriculture in particular offers a wide field with its aspects. Dottenfelderhof pigs are mainly used as waste, eight Bunte Bentheimer and Duroc sows regularly provide for offspring. The mast is made naturally and directly on the farm.

Chickens should not be missing from the animal portfolio. Laying hens can peck and scratch as they please in their generous run. There are many hiding places for chicken well-being.

In addition, dairy cows are the main focus. The 80-head black-and-white herd not only supplies high-quality milk – which is processed at the company’s dairy and later sold in-store in the form of cheese, yogurt, quark and fresh milk – but also valuable manure. which provides fertile ground. When raising calves, the farm is based on the most natural variant: parenting. “Calves are allowed to drink directly from their mother’s breast. “Not only do you get all the important nutrients, but you also enjoy a breeding that suits the species,” explains farmer Matthias König. “Direct human contact is also important. This strengthens the human-animal relationship. “Going to pasture is self-evident in the Dottenfelderhof anyway. In addition, the cows have a spacious low barn with an outdoor exercise area.

Lots of variety

The Dottenfelderhof cultivates about 215 hectares, which corresponds to about 300 football fields. Half of it is used as a meadow all year round. It is the main source of food for the animal. A large variety of plants grow and bloom in the other half. This includes cereals such as wheat, rye, shellfish or corn, as well as potatoes and all kinds of vegetables and fruits. There is also a colorful field with flowers in the yard. This not only pleases the visitors, who can make their own bouquet, but also insects and birds.

Diversity starts from the beginning, that is, with the seeds. It is now normal for a farmer to get his seeds from the trader. Not so at the Dottenfelderhof. New types of grains and vegetables are grown here and made accessible to the general public. Breeders, including Hartmut Spieß, have their own test areas around the farm. High requirements for the best possible quality

The profile of a biological variety is often more multifaceted and different from that of conventional breeding. The focus is more on quality instead of the highest possible yield, which is reflected in taste. Plants in organic farming also need different properties for cultivation. The rapid growth of young people is of great importance in organic farming. The soil is covered faster and the weeds can no longer germinate as easily.

Nutrients that are not available in excess must be used effectively by plants. Organic farming is careful with pores, seeds and plants. Genetic engineering is completely avoided here. The plant cell and its genes are respected as indivisible units.
